The Post Graduate Department of Microbiology was established in 1993 is one of the oldest and pioneer departments in the state of Karnataka. The course was inaugurated by Mr. S.M.Yahiya, the then minister for higher education, Govt. of Karnataka. The PG. Department of Biotechnology was started in 2002 is full of vitality and vigor. The PG departments have started under the stewardship of former Principal Prof. Y. Azeez Ahmed. Both PG. departments are housed in the 3rd floor of the west block of Al-Ameen educational campus.
The PG. Departments have made steady progress in teaching and research since their establishment and have been recognized by various universities in the state and throughout the country. Alumni of 14 years old Al-Ameen PG. departments have distinguished themselves at the National and International levels. They have spread far and wide globally and done their Alma Mater proud by excelling themselves as academicians, administrators, scholars, entrepreneurs and technocrats.

Laboratory
The departments have high-tech laboratories (Plant Tissue culture, Fermentation, Molecular Biology, Aseptic, Medical, and Bioinformatics Labs.) fully equipped with the modern sophisticated scientific equipments including computers and internet to meet the requirements for teaching and research in various areas of Microbiology and Biotechnology. All laboratories are well ventilated, spacious and meet the safety norms.
Equipment
Apart from the basic instruments, the departments have sophisticated scientific instruments like – PCR (Techne,UK), UV-visible Spectrophotometer (Evolution100-UK), Trinocular Phase-Contrast Microscope with Photomicrography, drawing attachment and CCTV adaptor (Olympus CX40-Japan), Advanced Bionocular Research Microscopes (20 No’s), Digital Camera with image soft ware, Fermenter (LF 5ltrs. capacity), Biosafety cabinet, Deep freezers (-20c), Refregirated centrifuge, Incubator Shaker (Orbital & Rotary), Inspissator, Air-sampler, Laminar Air-flows, Disttillation units with quartz condenser, etc., are housed in a centralized air-conditioned instrument room.
Library and Information
In addition to the main centralized library in the campus, and the PG. department has its own library with around 1500 books in all the subjects covering their curricula, national and international journals, science magazines encyclopedia, conference proceedings and manuals etc. The students enrolled in the departments can avail both reading as well as lending facility.
Recognizing the importance of plentiful practical exposure to computers, Al-Ameen has established a well equipped cyber center with an independent server and ready access to the information highway. All workstations are linked to a Local Area Network, so as to speed up communication and resource sharing. Facilities like Internet and E-mail, which will enable communication with other academic and research institutes around the world, are available here.
Lecture and Seminar Halls
Well furnished Lecture Halls supported with the state of the art audio-visual aids like OHP, slide projector and LCD. The modern Seminar Hall with a seating capacity of more than 150 is used for organizing meetings, seminars, workshops and group discussions. |
The students of the department have been excelling in the university examinations bagging ranks every year. They have been placed in leading biotech companies through campus interviews.

Placement
Students find placement after their course in various Research and Pharma Industries. Campus interviews are being conducted by reputed companies / organizations having R & D program. No successful post-graduate has remained unemployed.
Activities
A biennial news bulletin MICROBE is being published by the PG. departments which include latest scientific articles from academicians, faculties and students. The first issue of news bulletin was released by Dr. N.R.Shetty former Vice Chancellor of Bangalore University during the year 1993.
Al-Ameen Association of Microbiologists namely MICROBIONTS was established in 1995 has been organizing and conducting seminars, symposia, workshops, Science exhibition and other academic activities year after year, and now the same association is renamed in 2002 as Al-Ameen Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology – ASMB.
Sports
A healthy body can house a healthy mind. PG. students are encouraged to take up sports in their free hours. Annual sports meet will be conducted with other PG. students and Medals, individual and champion trophies, along with certificates will be awarded.
Beyond the Curriculum
To prepare and equip with all the eventualities in Microbiology and Biotechnology, students will be given beyond the curriculum scope that is research projects and survey workshops. Identified advance learners will be given total encouragement to take up individual research project. Industries involved in the production of Biotechnology products will be approached for both placement and rapport to permit our students to have technical practical knowledge. This is to make the students to take up individual entrepreneurship.
F A C U L T I E S
The students are trained by very able, approachable, experienced, dedicated faculty who are specialized in various fields and posses high academic qualification in different branches of Microbiology and Biotechnology. Dr. M.A.Azeem, Professor and Head of the departments has been awarded “The Young Scientist Award” by National Environment Science Academy (NESA), New Delhi and was the visiting faculty at the Bangalore University, Bangalore for a period from 2002-2006.
